Background: Christie Ontko has lived all her life on a small resort island called Put-in-Bay, OH. This experience has given her the opportunity to meet interesting tourists from all walks of life. It has also given her time to contemplate life. She has always enjoyed writing and has kept a journal since the age of five. A first grade classroom is the place she calls home nine months each year. With the support of her two daughters and many pets, Christie plunges into life at full speed. She may be contacted at c_ontko@put-in-bay.k12.oh.us.
Christie was the subject of my poem, A Cool August Day. Little did I realize at the time that she was a budding poet and writer.
Nightime
My body needs to rest,
....while my soul sneaks away,
....tethered by an invisible cord.
Held back no longer by physical form,
....I have flown, danced,
....pranced, and partied
....'till dawn.

Nightime is
....a time to visit others.
To spend moments with
....those who've been long gone
....– missing but seeing –
....again.

Something calls to me
....from these
....nightime journeys.
"You need to rest."
"You need to sleep."
I agree...
....but my soul fails to listen.
