Background: The need to express herself through the arts has been the essence of Mavis Hendrix Viles' life. Through her college years, time in the Women's Air Corps and her marriage, she says that "music, drama, painting and sculpture have teased my mind and stolen my time, but the writing of poetry and short stories has been constant. Creating is like breathing to me. I couldn't live without either." She has authored two books, Chocolate At Midnight ($12) and Whispered Kisses ($17.95) Our guest poet currently lives in Clearwater, Florida. Mavis is now deceased. |

Dancing On Pearls
|
|
When music touches the soul of the ballerina,
her body makes love to the world.
The smooth round beads in her hair
echo the tears in her heart
and her mind denies the pain
of years and hours of repetitive abuse.
Gracefully, she bends. The skirt of her tutu
forms a halo, while her butterfly hands trace poems
and her toes whisper quick kisses
to the chalk-marked floor of the stage.
The satyr who lifts and holds her
in sculpture-like beauty, is not her lover
but only her partner and abettor
in the forever wooing of a stern god,
the round, lustrous, perfect pearl
of dance.
