Spring's Echoes

I hear the echoes of all those Springs gone by

With my roller skates tightened to my shoes
        .........I'm ready to glide.
Stepping over the grassy edges of sidewalks
.........Raised from tree roots and time

My prom dress rustling from the full netted slip.
High heels clicking on the gym floor,
.........As the needle hits the grooves,
        .........of a stack of forty-fives.

Dad sitting on the front porch
        The radio broadcasting the game.
        His cigar jabbing the air,
.........When his team makes a good play.

The candle light wedding at the old stone church.
The minute hand on the rise.
The convertible top down on a balmy night
Horns blaring loudly as we cruise through downtown.

The joyful smile on a young child's face,
.........As her two wheeler stays upright.
With a push of her feet,
        .........She's off and away.
        .........Another victorious ride!

Walking the pebbly sand on the beach
.........My jeans rolled up to my knees.
The blue and white speed boat
        .........Cutting through the waves
.........In the water of Presque Isle Bay

So who is this lady looking back at me?
        No ponytail swinging
.........As she sashays down the street.
The polka-dot bikini has long seen it's day.
A much wiser face has settled into place.

So, with each new Spring a rebirth comes alive!

        But stop and take heed,
.........As you 're rushing through today.
For in the echoes of past Springs,
.........You'll find all those things that have faded away.
